Sustainable Design -Essay-

Sustainable Design: New Paradigm in global design

The Sustainable Design is a new design concept that includes the preservation of green and open spaces, mixing it with principles of economic and social development. Sustainable Design is seem nowadays as a tool to achieve sustainability in architectural and urban projects among other areas related to design and people.

This trend inside design is the answer to the critical weather change that affects all the activities made day by day people. Some of the principles that are used into sustainable design turn around recycling, reuse and durability. That is why energy efficiency, low impact materials and healthy buildings are the most important principles of sustainable design.

As we can see, these principles seek efficient and effective solutions for the non-renewable and non-reusable materials and buildings trying not to use more than the necessary in a cleaver way.

Energy and water are the common used elements that make our lives easier and comfortable. That is why we have been abusing of them, making worse the environmental problem. Energy is used in all the technological products and its production wastes a lot of materials and also affects negatively the environment. Not only electric energy, produced by water or heat is against sustainability: oil produced energy used in most of the cars, trunks and industries pollutes the environment, affects the health of people and are, in most of the cases expensive, decreasing the opportunities of under-developed countries to grow.

Water, in the other hand is the vital liquid necessary not only for industrial production or agriculture but also to maintain the heath of people which are the principal work-hand for industries and economic development.

Urban Planning is nowadays experiencing this new trend too: groups like New Urbanism and Smart Growth are establishing some guidelines to urban planners interested in sustainable design and development.

The sustainable cities seek the efficient use of abandoned buildings, mixed land-use, public transportation, adequate pedestrian spaces and protected environment areas. Principles that guides toward a better quality of life, compact cities and mixed society, aware of the environmental issues and against the urban sprawl that depends entirely of the car, one the problems that faces our cities.

Some examples of cities that have sustainable design principles are: Curitiba, Brazil; with an efficient public transportation system, mixed land-uses and open spaces that increases the quality of live.

Rome, Italy and other cities in Europe that also applies the principles of sustainable city design mixed with other planning line: the slow city that seeks the reduction of the accelerated life.

New York, Dublin, Barcelona, Medellin, Tokyo and Shanghai are other cities that are implementing sustainable principles into the planning system as a way to reduce the global warming effect and afford the economical and social changes produced by this environmental problem.

As we can see, there is not a pattern inside the sustainable design application inside the cities; most of the biggest cities of the world had started to apply it, and the only thing that is truly necessary to make it real is political and social effort.
