Susan Nyrop

Denmark

Denmark and Sweden: The Oresundsbron Bridge

One of the most important things that Susan and Oresundsbron Bridge shows us is the importance of bridges. Susan mentions that bridges are Strategic: they enhance the opportunity of development in both cultural and economical matters.

Oresundsbron Bridge is the result of the continuous expansion of Copenhagen (Capital city of Denmark) and helps not only this city but also the whole country producing more employment through the construction of the bridge.

It also have help to develop a new educational strategy: Both Universities –Sweden and Denmark Universities- have now a policy that helps the students interchange to improve the knowledge of a different culture taking advantage of the similarity of the languages.

This bridge is a “road bridge” –A Suspension Bridge- that also includes a tunnel. Its characteristics help to implement a new transportation pattern: the ferries are not longer used to transport supplies; the bridge facilitates the connection between these countries improving the economical interchange even with Norway.

Frankfurt: Eiserner Bridge

This video starts with an introduction to the location of the bridge and with a short history about Frankfurt. One main element that is interesting is that Germany is at the centre of Europe and Frankfurt at the centre of Germany.

The focus of this presentation is in the river, because is the reason to built the bridge. Barbara told us that the Eiserner Bridge was constructed from a payment made from the money of the citizens that were tired to wait for the government to build the bridge.

The Eiserner Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that gives the impression of be a suspension bridge when is actually a truss bridge. The actual bridge is not the original one; it was modified to allow shipping pass when Frankfurt became a commercial centre. In the original bridge there were two gothic towers that gave it an elegant appearance.

In this way we learned that bridges are not only for cars or buses but also for pedestrians, that their location inside the city responds to a physical argument and that a bridge could be an image that could evolve through the time.

Rita Zeinstejer

Argentina

Rosario and Victoria: Paraná Bridge

It begins with a description of the location of the bridge and the river it crosses. The Paraná River starts in Brazil and ends at La Plata River in Argentina. The Paraná Bridge is one the longest bridges of South America and it connect two of the main manufacture cities of Argentina: Rosario and Victoria.

Rosario is a beautiful city located at the shore of the river; a river that is always crossed by commercial ships –cargo ships-. The continuous shipping pass and the necessary communication between the cities pressured the government to build the bridge.

In 2002 was inaugurated the Paraná Bridge, a Cable Stayed Bridge that extends 170Km passing over the little islands inside the river that really has 600Km long. The bridge reduced the travelling time between Rosario and Victoria from 5 hours to 15 minutes. One important thing about this bridge is that is not a pedestrian bridge; it only allows bus, cargo and cars.
